Comments: In mid 19th century America, important life events, such as birth, marriage and death had many social customs and practiced rituals surrounding them.  For christenings, friends and relatives often gave gifts of home made pin cushions to to parents of a newborn.  Designs and favorite sayings were marked out with pins.  This cushion's "Welcome as the Spring" hints at both a sense of celebration and the time of year of the baby's birth.
