  United States

Materials:
Fine white cotton (Indian?) with narrow woven pin stripe, sheer cotton mull cuff and neck ruffles, three mother of pearl buttons close the top center front and one button on each cuff..

Condition: Excellent; two very small rust spots (larger of the two has worn through fabric) and a few small pin holes in back.

Measurements: Sh-Sh, 19"; B, 68"; L, 29"; Hem C, 72"; Slv L, 24.5".

Comments: Ladies sacques are thought to be 19th century descendants of the 18th century's informal short gowns (loose fitting blouse).  A woman would have worn this dressing sacque while sitting in her bed, either when ill or nursing an infant. The loose style and dropped sleeve allows for ease and comfort, while the fine cuff and neck ruffles preserve decorum. Two woven bands of repeating botehs decorate the shoulder. The shape of the sleeves, character of materials, and extremely fine sewing suggest a date of 1820-1830. Very rare ladies garment.
