Materials: White cotton, linen torchon
lace, 3 mother of pearl buttons, cotton tapes.
Provenance: Petticoat belonged to Alice
Faye Otis. In 1883 Alice Faye was living in Boston when she married Dr.
Otis, a psychiatrist. Soon after their wedding, the Otises moved to
Vienna, Austria where Dr. Otis set up a successful practice.
Condition: Perfect.
Measurements: W, 28"; Front L,
41"; Back L, 43.5"; Hem C, 84".
Comments: This petticoat would have been
worn over a tied on horsehair or sprung steel back bustle. There are
opposing draw strings underneath the sixth (bottom) cotton ruffle to
increase the petticoat's gathers over the bustle. Handmade bobbin lace,
machine stitching and impeccable construction add up to a museum quality
example of a rare 1880s bustle petticoat.
