Comments: This garment is fascinating on
many levels. The fabrics used are of exceptional quality. Stitching throughout
this dress is meticulously fine. In many places this brown calico has been
deliberately pieced together, much like a quilt. In the collar, the shoulders,
the bodice front and the sides of the skirt there are triangular piece of fabric
cleverly matched and worked into the dress. Sleeves and bodice are lined in a
beautiful tiny gauge turquoise gingham. There are two 10" pocket openings
in the side seams just below the gathered waist. A cotton cord is drawn through
a casing across the dress back, emerging under the arms to tie in the dress
front just under the breasts. This dress was constructed with comfort in mind. I
believe this was a maternity dress from the prominent, early 19th century New
Jersey Brick family.
