#2249  Shoe Buckles   c. 1770

Materials:
Silver setting, steel clasps and paste stones.

Condition: One paste stone missing, otherwise perfect.

Measurements: 2 1/8" X 1 3/4".

Comments: Beginning in the mid 17th century buckles came into fashion on the continent and in America. They were used to fasten shoes, garters and gentlemen's knee breeches. In the late 18th century the rising popularity of string ties put many a buckle manufacturer out of business. Offered for sale here is a pair of paste and silver shoe buckles, probably used to fasten a gentleman's shoes in the mid to late 18th c.
