#1989   Summer Dress   c. 1855

  United States

Materials: Roller printed cotton in maroon and burgundy on cream, muslin bodice lining, bobbin lace, brass hooks and eyes.

Condition: Excellent, fabric strong. Center front skirt opening has an easily repaired 3" tear.

Measurements: B, 30"; W, 23"; Bodice L, 13"; Skirt L, 41"; Hem C, 158".

Comments: Charming hand sewn day dress exhibits construction techniques of the mid 1850s:  front-opening short bodice, full gauged skirt, piped waistband and armscyes, curved and topstitched back bodice seams. The muslin lining in the sleeves is trimmed in handmade bobbin lace.  I believe this dress was lovingly made for a very special occasion, perhaps a summer party or dance.
