Materials: Cream silk crepe, light brown
silk faille, silk gros grain ribbons, 13 Dorset buttons, brass hooks and
eyes, brown silk and buckram linings, 7 baleen stays, machine made lace.
Provenance: I bought this from a dealer
who said it was a wedding dress from a Massachusetts family.
Label: Stamped in silver on petersham:
"James McCreery & Co. B'Way Cor 11th St. New York".
Condition: Very Good. The cream silk crepe is
in wonderful shape with just some minor staining on the train. Even the
bodice lining is in excellent condition. The skirt's brown silk
faille pleating and ruching is damaged in places; some of the ruched pieces
are tearing and have come unstitched from the buckram backing. These
could easily be repaired.
Measurements: Sh-Sh, 15"; B,
34"; W, 24"; H, 44"; Sh-W, 13"; Slv L, 19";
Front Dress L, 55"; Back Dress L, 88".
Comments: The elongated, stately line of
this dress, with no waist seam and fitting over the hips, is
characteristic of late 1870s fashion. The long train has wonderful
drapery swags and double rows of box pleated flounces.
