#1559    Bicycle Dress    c. 1900

United States

Materials: Dark blue knit wool jersey, white braid trim, mother of pearl buttons, elastic, steel hooks.

Condition: Excellent. Two tiny holes in top's front pleats, and elastic in bloomers has lost its stretch.

Measurements: Top: Sh-Sh, 16"; B, 40"; Slv L, 26"; W, 23". Bloomers: W, 23", L, 31".

Comments: The wool jersey used in this lady's cycling outfit is very soft and supple. A bicycle dress is described in an 1894 issue of Harper's Bazaar as having, "Turkish trousers, long and ample....made of such fullness that when standing upright the division is obliterated. Very wide at the bottom, they droop deeply upon gaiters of cloth to match."
