Materials: Gown: Cream silk satin,
pleated silk chiffon, crystal beads, faux pearls, white muslin bodice
and skirt lining, 15 baleen stays, brass hooks & eyes, buckram hem
lining, bobbin lace, down-filled under arm pads. Camisole and Pantalets:
Ivory cotton, bobbin lace, embroidered eyelet, mother of pearl buttons. Coronet:
Wax orange blossoms, satin covered frame, silk tulle. Also included is a
fine knit silk undershirt with a crochet yoke.
Provenance: From a Maynard, Massachusetts family.
The woman who wore this married the town's chief of police.
Condition: Wedding gown is in
remarkable/excellent condition. There is very minor damage on the
pleated chiffon (not noticeable); the skirt has one pea sized hole near
the hem and a couple wear spots on the skirt's heavy satin folds.
Interior of the gown is pristine as is the camisole and pantalets. The
orange blossoms on the coronet have cracked some and most of the tulle
veil was cut off (probably shredded).
Measurements: Bodice: B, 32"; W,
22"; Sh-Sh, 11"; Slv L, 25". Skirt: W, 21"; Front L,
38"; Back L, 48"; Hem C, 186".
Comments: Late 19th century wedding
gowns are getting difficult to find, being popular with antique clothing
collectors. Even harder to find are high quality gowns with trousseau
pieces all in great condition, as is offered here. The costly satin
fabric that makes up this gown is a gorgeous shade of golden cream.
Elegant pearl and crystal beading is set amidst pleated chiffon ruffles
on the bodice. Workmanship on this 1895 wedding ensemble is
superior quality throughout.
